Red Clover

Non-fermented red clover is reported relatively safe for nursing moms. However, fermented red clover should be avoided altogether. Not to be used during pregnancy or by persons taking blood thinning agents. See additional info on the galactagogue page. Reported to be very useful for nursing moms trying to conceive. More information on red clover in general can be found at WebMD and Health Notes and The Natural Pharmacist.

Red Raspberry

Considered safe for nursing moms. Red raspberry may cause mild loosening of stools and nausea. See additional info on the galactagogue page. Reported useful for nursing moms who are trying to conceive. See additional info in HealthNotes, WebMD and The Natural Pharmacist.

Red Root

I couldn't find information on this. If you have any info on the safety of this herb for nursing moms, please let me know.

Rhubarb

This should be avoided while breastfeeding because of its anthranoid content. More here on breastfeeding and rhubarb. Additional general information at WebMD.

Rosemary

There is no evidence to indicate that intermittent intake of moderate amounts of rosemary poses any threat during pregnancy or lactation. However, internal intake of the oil should be avoided during pregnancy because it may act as an abortifacient. A rosemary infusion is suggested for use in warm compresses when treating mastitis. Additional general info at HealthNotes and WebMD.

Royal Jelly, Bee Pollen

As far as I can determine, this shouldn't pose a problem for the breastfeeding baby. However, for anyone considering royal jelly or similar things such as bee pollen:

  • People allergic to specific pollens have developed asthma, hives, and anaphylactic shock after ingesting pollen or royal jelly.
  • Royal jelly is produced by bees and has caused life-threatening attacks of asthma in people allergic to bees, some resulting in death.

So if you have asthma or allergies, be aware that royal jelly or bee pollen can cause serious allergic reactions.
