Are you ready to try to conceive your second child, but still enjoying a breastfeeding relationship with your firstborn? Or perhaps you are breastfeeding your child over a kicking baby belly? If so you are not alone—far from it. In a study of 179 mothers who had breastfed for at least six months, 61% had also breastfed during a subsequent pregnancy.1 Of these, 38% went on to nurse both newborn and toddler postpartum, an arrangement known as “tandem nursing.”

Adventures in Tandem Nursing: About the Book

My name is Hilary Flower. I tandem nursed my daughter and son for 18 months, and my son is still nursing. While I was trying to sort through the challenges and joys of my own tandem nursing experience, I began writing a book on the topic. How exciting to connect with 200 other mothers who had breastfed during pregnancy and either weaned during pregnancy or went on to tandem nurse! How gratifying to dig into scientific literature and correspond with researchers, finally getting some answers to the many questions that arise!

Breastfeeding agitation is no fun, and pregnancy seems to be a particularly common time for breastfeeding agitation to strike (affecting roughly one-third of pregnant and breastfeeding mothers). Some pregnant mothers can tell you exactly what week the agitation set in for them, and although it differs from woman to woman, mid-pregnancy seems to be a common time of onset. Many women find that the agitation abates in late pregnancy, while others find that this is when it’s most intense.

You hear a lot about how breastfeeding is so good for your baby... and it sure is. But in the stressful days of early motherhood, maybe you’d like to know about something that’s easy for you. The good news is that breastfeeding is just as easy for Mom as it is healthy for baby! What a divine design!

Sweet Sleep

The convenience factor came up in a conversation around my kitchen table last week, she nursing her 8-week-old boy and I nursing my almost-3-years-old girl. “I just can’t imagine having to get out of bed in the middle of the night to go get a bottle, and waiting in the cold kitchen for it to warm up. Meanwhile the baby’s crying, cause when he’s hungry, he wants it right away.”
