Our sponsor for the month is Ameda…
Keeping your milk safe with Ameda
If you have spent any time researching breastfeeding and pumping you have probably seen the discussions about open vs. closed system pumps. So, what is the difference and why is it important? Let’s see if we can clear up some of these questions!
Let’s start with the basics.
When a mom is feeding her baby from the breast, there is no need to worry about storing her milk or keeping her milk safe for her baby. Milk goes straight from mom to the baby’s stomach.
When a mom is not able to feed her baby straight from the breast, a breast pump is a great way to provide milk for her baby and/or keep up her supply while they are apart.
What is the difference between a closed and open system breast pump?
A true closed system has a barrier that prevents milk from getting into the tubing. Ameda’s HygieniKit® System has the world’s only Proven Airlock Protection™ protective barrier (laboratory-tested) reducing risk and simplifying pump use and care.
The risk of an open system pumps is it doesn’t prevent moisture and milk from getting into the tubing or even the motor. Without an effective barrier, viruses and bacteria can grow. Mold can be a consequence. No matter how safely you store your milk, if the milk is contaminated during pumping it may not be safe for baby.
That is why Ameda is proud that all our pumps offer a closed system!
From hospital to home you can feel secure knowing that your milk is safe while pumping. All of our pumps use the Ameda HygieniKit® Milk Collection System (kit). The Ameda kit ONLY works with Ameda pumps. It is FDA cleared and creates a barrier that protects pumped breast milk from potential contaminants, such as viruses and bacteria that may be present in the pump and or kit tubing AND pump and kit tubing from potential contaminants, such as virus and bacteria, that may be present in collected milk. Every piece of the system that touches your baby’s milk is easy to clean and air dry. That means your milk is safe when you go to store it!
