Keeping your milk safe with Ameda
If you have spent any time researching breastfeeding and pumping you have probably seen the discussions about open vs. closed system pumps. So, what is the difference and why is it important? Let’s see if we can clear up some of these questions!
Let’s start with the basics.
When a mom is feeding her baby from the breast, there is no need to worry about storing her milk or keeping her milk safe for her baby. Milk goes straight from mom to the baby’s stomach.
When a mom is not able to feed her baby straight from the breast, a breast pump is a great way to provide milk for her baby and/or keep up her supply while they are apart.
What is the difference between a closed and open system breast pump?
A true closed system has a barrier that prevents milk from getting into the tubing. Ameda’s HygieniKit® System has the world’s only Proven Airlock Protection™ protective barrier (laboratory-tested) reducing risk and simplifying pump use and care.
The risk of an open system pumps is it doesn’t prevent moisture and milk from getting into the tubing or even the motor. Without an effective barrier, viruses and bacteria can grow. Mold can be a consequence. No matter how safely you store your milk, if the milk is contaminated during pumping it may not be safe for baby.
