Baby’s Second Night https://kellymom.com/ages/newborn/bf-basics/second-night/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=second-night Sat, 03 Sep 2011 16:59:36 +0000 http://kellymom.com/?p=2022 You've made it through your first 24 hours as a new mom. Maybe you have other children, but you are a new mom all over again...and now it is your baby's second night.

All of a sudden, your little one discovers that he's no longer back in the warm and comfortable – albeit a bit crowded – womb where he has spent the last 8 ½ or 9 months – and it is SCARY out here!

Breastfeeding after a Cesarean Birth https://kellymom.com/ages/newborn/newborn-concerns/c-section/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=c-section Fri, 05 Aug 2016 17:06:00 +0000 http://kellymom.com/?p=2031 Educate yourself and arrange for breastfeeding help

Find a La Leche League group near you! Try to attend at least one meeting before your baby is born. Ask questions!

Talk to the lactation consultant (LC)--assuming your hospital has one on staff--and ask that she meet with you as soon as you get out of the operating room. She can help you position your baby as painlessly as possible. If an LC is not available, ask one of the nurses and/or have your partner or another helper available to help out.

Breastfeeding Logs https://kellymom.com/ages/newborn/bf-basics/bf-logs/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=bf-logs Sat, 27 Aug 2011 16:33:03 +0000 http://kellymom.com/?p=2001 Under normal circumstances it is not necessary to use a breastfeeding log. However, some mothers feel more comfortable in the beginning if they are keeping track of nursings and diapers. Most mothers will benefit from the safety net of using a log for the first week or so until they and their baby's health care provider are reassured that breastfeeding is going well and that baby's weight gain pattern is adequate.

Breastfeeding to Sleep and Other Comfort Nursing https://kellymom.com/bf/normal/comfortnursing/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=comfortnursing Tue, 02 Aug 2011 15:30:58 +0000 http://kellymom.com/?p=2593 Many moms feel guilty for nursing their baby to sleep. Nursing your baby to sleep is not a bad thing to do! It's very normal and developmentally appropriate for babies to nurse to sleep and to wake 1-3 times during the night for the first year or so. Some babies don't do this, but they are the exception, not the rule. Many children, if given the choice, prefer to nurse to sleep through the second year and beyond. Nursing is obviously designed to comfort baby and to help baby sleep, and I've never seen a convincing reason why mothers shouldn't use this wonderful "tool" that we've been given.

Breastfeeding your newborn — what to expect in the early weeks https://kellymom.com/hot-topics/newborn-nursing/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=newborn-nursing Fri, 03 Nov 2023 20:08:45 +0000 http://kellymom.com/?p=1384 Frequent nursing encourages good milk supply and reduces engorgement. Aim for breastfeeding at least 10 - 12 times per day (24 hours). You CAN'T breastfeed too often--you CAN breastfeed too little. Nurse at the first signs of hunger (stirring, rooting, hands in mouth)--don't wait until baby is crying. Allow baby unlimited time at the breast when sucking actively, then offer the second breast. Some newborns are excessively sleepy at first--wake baby to nurse if 2 hours (during the day) or 4 hours (at night) have passed without nursing.
